Tenor Stéfan Louw is back in South Africa after performing in Europe for almost a year and is proud to announce the release of his second album, Lirico – A collection of lyric tenor arias.
Louw, whose career took off in 1998 after receiving the FNB Vita Award for Most Promising Newcomer for his role as Beppe in I Pagliacci at the Pretoria State Theatre, says that he has been planning his second album ever since the release of his first album, Reflections, in 2010.
“Because I focus my career on being a performing artist and not a recording artist, it was difficult to find time to spend in the recording studio,” he says. “When I returned from Europe mid-November last year I realised that it is the perfect opportunity to take some time ‘off’ to record my album before I started rehearsals for La Traviata in December.”
Lirico is a collection of lyric tenor arias from operas composed between 1756 and 1924. It includes the works of composers like Mozart, Donizetti, Von Flotow, Verdi, Gounod, and Puccini. Louw, who made his opera directing debut in 2015 with Big Wig Opera’s production of L’elisir d’amore, demonstrates his skill as a producer with this album that was recorded at his own professional recording studio.
With arias like Dalla sua pace, Una furtiva lagrima, La donna è mobile, and Che gelida manina he demonstrates his beautiful tenor voice and it is no wonder that the Sunday Times wrote in 2005 that his voice should be declared a national treasure.
In the past 20 years, Louw has performed leading roles in more than 30 operas in South Africa, the United States of America, and Europe and has sung more than 500 performances. He was most recently heard as Alfredo in La Traviata for a privately commissioned opera in Stilbaai (Western Cape) and will be heard as Don José in Sempre Opera’s production of Carmen in May this year.
